Bricklaying
This course is designed for learners who want to start building practical skills in bricklaying and prepare for future progression in the construction industry.
Students will spend much of their time in a workshop environment, learning how to use tools, handle materials and complete brickwork tasks safely. The course introduces key areas of the trade, including building solid walls, cavity walls, following construction plans, mixing materials and understanding safe working practice.
Learners will also develop wider employability skills such as communication, teamwork, organisation, resilience and attention to detail. By the end of the course, students should have greater confidence in their practical ability and a stronger understanding of what is expected in construction settings.
What will I learn?
You will learn practical bricklaying skills and gain an understanding of the tools, materials and methods used within the trade.
This may include building solid walls, building cavity walls, measuring and setting out, following construction plans, mixing materials, using bricklaying tools and working safely in a workshop or site-style environment.
You will also learn about health and safety, building standards, following instructions, completing practical tasks and taking pride in accurate, well-finished work.
How will I be taught?
You will be taught through practical workshop sessions, tutor demonstrations, guided tasks, independent practice and small group support.
The course is hands-on and designed to help you build your skills step by step. Tutors will show you how to use tools and materials safely, then support you as you practise and improve your bricklaying technique.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through practical tasks, workshop-based evidence, tutor observations, written work and your understanding of safe working practices.
Your tutor will support you throughout the course and help you understand what you need to complete for each unit or assessment task.
What can I do next?
After completing this course, you may be able to progress onto further study, an apprenticeship or entry-level employment in construction.
This course can support progression into bricklaying apprenticeships, site-based work or further construction training. With more experience and qualifications, learners may work towards becoming a professional bricklayer or progressing into wider skilled construction roles.
Is there anything else I need to know?
This is a practical course, so you should be prepared to work in a workshop environment and take part in hands-on construction tasks.
You will be expected to follow health and safety guidance, use tools and materials responsibly and work towards improving your practical skills throughout the course.
Entry requirements
You will need to have a successful discussion with a tutor before starting the course.
You should also have a genuine interest in bricklaying or construction, the ability to study independently, good communication skills and a hardworking approach towards the trade.
