Site Carpentry
This course is designed for learners who want to develop practical skills in site carpentry and build the knowledge needed to work as part of a construction team.
Students will learn how carpenters use tools, materials and machinery to cut, shape, fix and install timber-based structures and components. The course supports learners to develop confidence with hand tools, industrial machinery, construction methods and safe working practice.
Learners will also build wider employability skills such as communication, teamwork, organisation, problem-solving and attention to detail. Successful students may continue their training at a higher level, move into employment or progress onto an apprenticeship in site carpentry or a related construction trade.
What will I learn?
You will learn practical site carpentry skills and gain an understanding of the tools, materials and methods used within the trade.
This may include measuring, marking out, cutting, shaping, fixing, assembling timber components, using hand tools and working safely with workshop or site-based equipment.
You will also learn about health and safety, working in a construction environment, following instructions, completing practical tasks and producing accurate work to a good standard.
How will I be taught?
You will be taught through practical workshop sessions, tutor demonstrations, guided tasks, independent practice and small group support.
The course is hands-on and designed to help you build your skills step by step. Tutors will show you how to use tools, materials and equipment safely, then support you as you practise and improve your technique.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through practical tasks, workshop-based evidence, tutor observations, written work and your understanding of safe working practices.
Your tutor will support you throughout the course and help you understand what you need to complete for each unit or assessment task.
What can I do next?
After completing this course, you may be able to continue your training at a higher level or progress into employment.
This course can also support progression onto an apprenticeship in site carpentry or a related construction trade. With further training and experience, learners may work towards roles such as site carpenter, advanced craft site carpenter or other skilled construction roles.
You may also find work with housebuilding companies, property development businesses, construction companies or smaller businesses that repair and refurbish buildings.
Is there anything else I need to know?
This is a practical course, so you should be prepared to work in a workshop environment and take part in hands-on construction tasks.
You will be expected to follow health and safety guidance, use tools and materials responsibly and work towards improving your practical skills throughout the course.
Entry requirements
You will need to have a successful discussion with a tutor before starting the course.
You should also have a genuine interest in site carpentry or construction, the ability to study independently, good communication skills and a hardworking approach towards the trade.
